Social Enterprise in Nova Scotia – what’s happening…

Background

Since November 2009, the government of Nova Scotia (NS) has been facilitating a Social Enterprise Working Group comprised of federal and provincial civil servants and other professionals from various organizations across the province. By early 2011, the Working Group produced a discussion paper that explores social enterprise as a concept. The discussion paper refers to social enterprise as “businesses or organizations operated for the purpose of tackling social, economic or environmental challenges”. The Give: When you purchase the Meet Me Here application, the proceeds will benefit Phoenix Youth, who offer ten programs and services that support at-risk and homeless youth, ages 12-24. Phoenix help youth transition from a place of need, to a place of happy and healthy independence. Their mission is to break the cycle of poverty and homelessness.
