Last week we had some 50 attendees come together for the first night of Demo Hub, a speaker & networking series for Halifax entrepreneurs. The event was organized by the Hub, GrowthClick, Handy Theatre, Rob Begg, InNOVAcorp, The Uncommon Group and Beyond the Box Law.
After a drink and bite to eat, Tom McLellan from GrowthClick introduced the evening and our first guest. Gordon Stevens, owner of The Uncommon Group kicked things off with an inspirational talk about his own experience as an innovative entrepreneur in Halifax. It was helpful to hear honest and frank feedback about what it’s like to be starting a business, or multiple businesses in Gordon’s case. There was no advice about a special formula for success, but rather encouragement to keep on your toes and find your way through things. Sometimes it’s tough but you have to keep going and figure out what the next step is.
Christian Weisenburger, owner of Beyond the Box Law, shared some insights on the pro’s and con’s of incorporation, including some of the big tax advantages. It seems a lot of entrepreneurs delay these decisions, but it’s surprising how much time and money you can save by planning these things out from the beginning. And to close the evening presentations with a bang, Dan MacDonald, CEO of InNOVAcorp, delivered a tight and highly useful presentation on The Fundamentals of a Great Pitch. Dan’s presentation delivered important headlines on what to look for, knowing your audience, demonstrating what you know and organizing a concise and impressive pitch presentation using a story board. Demo Hub was sandwiched by some great networking before and after, giving everyone a chance to talk about the presentations and chat with the speakers. Most attendees seemed quite happy with the event, and we welcome any feedback or ideas for our next event.
