Queen Street Studios

Last Thursday, we ventured over to Queen Street Studios (QSS) in Dartmouth to meet with the entrepreneurs who started the space, Julia Rivard and Trevor Marshall. The intention behind meeting was to learn more about the story of their space, share information about opening the Hub Halifax and explore synergies and concerns about our ventures.

The building they are in is an old historic property downtown Dartmouth in good shape, boasting a beautiful view of the harbour from the top floor workspace. Though the exterior character of the building speaks of days past, the renovation inside reflects the feel you would expect from a place attracting a creative membership. The wonderful tall ceilings open the space immediately and look down on a comfy seating area, meeting/project room and an open workshop like space. When we walked in several people were busy setting up a soap photo shoot – it smelt great! On the walls hung a gallery of inspiring photos done by Shari Tucker called “Young and Fearless: Inspiration of Cancer Survivors”. It was exciting to be in this space and get a feel for what could emerge in Halifax.

Julia and Trevor shared a lot about their start up phase which included many challenges and victories, some of which we have experienced already with Hub developments. Others that will no doubt come further down the road. What’s clear is that it takes a lot of hard work, versatility and attention to start up and maintain a thriving open concept work space. Having good people to work with you helps and I know Amy Hawke, the space manager, puts in a great deal of time and effort to support the members.

We plan to keep in touch with the committed and inspiring people at QSS as we move forward. The question we hold is: What can we do with QSS to further support people who need a space in Halifax? What does that look like?

We encourage people to check out the QSS website and book some time in the space if you are looking for a refreshing place to work on a creative venture or even host a meeting.

Thank you to Julia and Trevor, we appreciate your time, openness and encouragement.
